Oil-bonded, flexible whetstones

For improving the surface finish of complex shapes, oil-bonded whetstones are the only viable option. A wide variety of bonds and grit sizes also allow for a suitable choice here. The hardness and composition of the material to be worked are decisive factors.

Oil-bonded whetstones are constructed so that the blunting grit breaks away and makes way for the new grit. The more wear-resistant the selected abrasive grit, the harder the bond. A soft stone is therefore often used when the shape is complex and the stone needs to quickly conform to the shape to process the entire surface. The hardness of the material determines the steps required to achieve the desired result. The added oil ensures proper drainage of the broken-off grit.

Advice: Always use a whetstone oil and never an oil not designed for honing. A regular oil will cause the broken-off grit to stick together, causing deep scratches in the surface.

Flexible Whetstones

For hard-to-reach areas in molds and products, there's the flexible whetstone. It consists of a fiber embedded with an abrasive grain, allowing the relatively small whetstone to withstand more stress without breaking. Flexible whetstones are ideal for almost all materials. The color indicates the grain size. These whetstones are available in thicknesses starting from 0.5 mm. There's also a round version with a collet with a diameter of 3 or 2.35 mm, allowing you to work with a rotary tool. Flexible whetstones can be dressed with a diamond file.
